Key Differences Between Water Hyacinth and Seagrass that You Should Know

Seagrass and Water Hyacinth are both plants that generate natural fibers used in handicrafts. Both of these natural fibers are quite popular in the market since they are used to manufacture a wide range of products from homeware to fashion. They are gathered, chopped, and dried with nearly the same process before being woven into any final products such as baskets, rugs or handbags. This also leads to many consumers mixing up seagrass with water hyacinth woven products. In fact, they have certain different characteristics that we should be aware of.

This article will help you better understand the key differences between seagrass and water hyacinth.

Growing area

seagrass

Seagrass and water hyacinth are both fast-growing plants that live in wet areas. Seagrass is, however, a plant that grows best in salt and muddy water, so it is often farmed in coastal or mangrove locations with fields of shallow and salty waters.

Although it is also a water-loving plant, water hyacinth is a free-floating plant that grows on water’s surface. Unlike seagrass, they do not require salt water to grow but are freshwater plants. They thrive in tropical rivers that have warm water and warm temperatures.

Color

After undergoing the process of cutting, splitting and drying, the color of these two natural fibers is not the same with each other.

Water hyacinth fibers will have a warm brown color. Seagrass fibers will have different color tones based on drying duration and temperature.

When the new product is completed knitting, the seagrass material will retain its green hue for a short time before becoming pale brown. In general, the color of seagrass fibers will be natural green to cool brown tones.

Shape and size

After processing, seagrass fibers become solid, tough, and flexible, with an average diameter of 0.2-0.3 centimeters. As a result, it may be used to weave ropes and baskets with handles thanks to its sturdy structure.

Water hyacinth, on the other hand, has broad, thick, and much softer, shining leaves that may grow up to 1 meter (3 feet). Water hyacinth fibers have a wider average diameter of 0.8 – 1 cm. Because of this characteristic, when woven into baskets, it is a shorter and thicker material, giving it a totally distinct look and feel than Seagrass.

Although they have different shapes, the combination of the two brings harmony to woven products. Let’s take a look at some knitted baskets and rugs from a combination of these two yarns.

Regardless of these differences, both seagrass and water hyacinth materials bring stunning and eco-friendly products

Because seagrass and water hyacinth are both utilized as food for animals or marine life (seagrass), when processed into natural fibers used in handicrafts, they provide eco-friendly green goods and do not have harmful impacts on customers’ health.
