Vietnamese Rugs Wholesale: A Buyer’s Guide to Natural Fiber Rugs

Handwoven natural fiber rugs made by Viet Trang Handicraft in Nga Son, Vietnam

Vietnamese rugs for wholesale are handwoven from natural fibers: mainly seagrass, water hyacinth, corn husk and palm leaf. At Viet Trang Handicraft we make round rugs, area rugs, runners and doormats in Nga Son, Thanh Hoa, a village where families have woven seagrass since the 1970s. Orders start at 50 pieces per design, samples take 7 to 14 days and bulk production takes about 45 days, shipped from Hai Phong port.

Key takeaways

  • Four fibers cover most natural rug ranges: seagrass (light, smooth, hard-wearing), water hyacinth (warm brown, soft underfoot), corn husk (milky white) and palm leaf (pale, clean edges).
  • Round rugs, area rugs, runners, doormats and foldable rugs can all be made in standard or custom sizes.
  • MOQ is 50 pieces per design and US$5,000 per order; samples take 7 to 14 days and production about 45 days.
  • Our factory is SMETA (Sedex) and BSCI audited, and every rug is dried and moisture-checked before packing.

What are Vietnamese natural rugs made of?

Most natural fiber rugs from Vietnam use one of four plant fibers, or a mix of two. Each has its own color, feel and best place in a home. Mixing fibers in one rug, for example seagrass with corn husk, is how we create tonal stripes and texture without any dye.

Which rug types can you source from Vietnam?

Round rugs

Round rugs are our most requested shape. They are woven in spirals, so a plain seagrass round rug already shows a soft circular texture. Decorative edges, such as a border of small woven circles, turn a basic round rug into a statement piece.

Area rugs

Rectangular area rugs anchor a sofa, bed or dining table. Water hyacinth gives a thick, warm-brown area rug; seagrass gives a lighter, flatter one. We make them in standard sizes and to custom dimensions.

Runners and doormats

Runners suit hallways and kitchens; doormats and small mats suit entrances. Striped designs that mix two fibers are popular for both, and foldable runners pack flat for efficient shipping.

How are natural fiber rugs woven in Nga Son?

Nga Son in Thanh Hoa province is one of the best-known seagrass growing and weaving areas in Vietnam. Our rugs follow the same steps our village has used for generations:

  1. Harvest. Seagrass and water hyacinth are cut and brought in from the fields and waterways around the village.
  2. Dry and sort. Fibers are sun-dried, sorted by length and color, and split to the right thickness.
  3. Weave. Artisans weave each rug by hand in plain, stripe, spiral or open-weave patterns.
  4. Finish. Edges are trimmed and bound, and the rug is shaped flat.
  5. Dry and check. Rugs go through our drying machines and a moisture check before packing, which is the key step in preventing mold during shipping.

Frequently asked questions

Are Vietnamese seagrass rugs durable?

Yes. Seagrass fiber is smooth and firm, so a well-woven seagrass rug handles everyday foot traffic in dry rooms. A rug pad and turning the rug now and then help it last longer.

What is the MOQ for wholesale rugs from Viet Trang?

Our minimum order is 50 pieces per design and US$5,000 per order. Mixing several designs in one order is common.

How long do samples and production take?

Samples of our own designs take 7 to 14 days. Samples of a customer’s own design depend on the design, so contact us to check. Bulk production takes about 45 days after order confirmation, and goods ship from Hai Phong port.

Can you make rugs in custom sizes or colors?

Yes. We make custom sizes and shapes, and we change the look by mixing natural fibers, for example seagrass with corn husk for light stripes. All colors are natural fiber tones, with no synthetic dyes.

How should natural fiber rugs be cleaned?

Vacuum gently, spot clean with a barely damp cloth and let the rug dry fully. Avoid soaking, machine washing and damp floors, because natural fiber should never stay wet.
