Why source seagrass baskets from Nga Son, Vietnam?

Seagrass grows in the brackish tidal fields along the Nga Son coast, and local families have woven it into mats and baskets for generations. Nga Son seagrass has a smooth, slightly silky surface, even natural color and good strength, which is why the district is the center of Vietnam’s seagrass basket industry.

Viet Trang Handicraft is based in the Nga Son craft village. Our family has woven seagrass since the 1970s, and we registered the company in 2001. Buying from us means buying from the maker at the origin of the fiber, not through a trading intermediary. Read more in Inside the Nga Son seagrass village.

How we keep seagrass baskets dry and consistent

Worker hanging bundles of twisted seagrass rope to dry at a workshop in Nga Son, Vietnam

Seagrass is twisted into rope and dried before weaving, and finished baskets are dried again in the sun and in drying machines before packing. Dry goods are the best protection against mold during sea freight. Our guide to preventing mold in natural fiber baskets explains what to check on arrival.

Because seagrass is a natural fiber, color varies slightly from batch to batch. We approve a reference sample with you before production so the bulk order matches it.

Custom sizes and private label

We make custom sizes, shapes, fiber mixes and colors, and private label products with your branding. See bespoke and private label natural fiber homeware for how a custom design moves from brief to sample to production.

Audits and materials

Our factory is SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) and BSCI audited, covering labor standards, working conditions, health and safety and business ethics. Audit reports are shared with buyers on request. Our seagrass products use the fiber’s natural colors, with no synthetic dyes.
