Water Hyacinth Baskets: A Wholesale Buyer’s Guide
26 Oct 2026A water hyacinth basket is a storage basket handwoven from the dried stems of the water hyacinth plant, either twisted into a rope first or flattened into a strip. For a wholesale program, three decisions carry most of the weight: the weave, the size and set structure, and the room the basket is going to live in. The last one is the most common source of complaints, because water hyacinth is a dry room material and does not belong anywhere it will stay damp.
Key takeaways
- Water hyacinth is woven three main ways: a thick braided rope, a flat strip, and an open lattice. Each one reads differently on a shelf and takes a different amount of hand labor.
- Most retail programs sell nested sets of two, three or five sizes rather than single pieces.
- The fiber carries dry household loads well. Keep it out of steamy rooms, off bare metal, and out of direct sun.
- Specify inside dimensions, not outside, and ask for a physical sample before you commit to a design.
What is a water hyacinth basket?
Water hyacinth is an aquatic plant harvested from rivers and lakes. The long stems are trimmed, sun dried and then either braided into a cord or used flat, and the finished fiber has a warm brown tone that needs no dye. Everything we weave stays in its natural hues, with no synthetic dyes. If you want the fiber itself explained from the plant upwards, we have written separately about what water hyacinth is as a material.
The material is already familiar to end consumers, which helps a new range sell through. Muji lists water hyacinth baskets handwoven by local artisans in Vietnam and describes them as woven from fast growing aquatic plants, noting that color, pattern and shape vary from piece to piece. IKEA weaves its SOARE place mat in Vietnam from water hyacinth growing in the Mekong River, and says that harvesting it keeps the waterway passable for the people living along the banks.
Which weave should you choose?
The weave decides the price, the look on a shelf and how the basket behaves in use. These are the four constructions we are asked for most often.
| Weave | How it reads | Where it suits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Braided rope | Chunky, with deep shadow lines between the coils | Living rooms, open shelving, under a console | Heaviest construction and the slowest to weave, so it sits at the top of the range |
| Flat strip | Smooth and quiet, a tighter surface | Bedrooms, children’s rooms, inside cabinetry | Strip width has to stay even across the set, which is a sampling check |
| Open lattice | Airy, light passes through the gaps | Pot covers, display, toy storage | Not suitable for small loose contents, and dust reaches the inside |
| Collapsible cube | Structured sides that fold flat | Value programs, e commerce, tight freight budgets | Ask how the empty basket holds its shape after it has been folded and unfolded |
We weave more than 250 basket designs across these constructions, and we also combine fibers within one piece, for example a water hyacinth body with a pale corn husk stripe. Combining fibers is one of the things our designers do most, and it is a quick way to make a standard shape look like your own.
What sizes and sets do retailers buy?
Nested sets are the normal unit of sale. A large share of our range goes out in sets of two, three or five graduated sizes, because a set fills a shelf properly, lifts the average order value and gives the end customer a reason to buy more than one. Custom sizing is available across most categories, so if your fixture is 32 cm deep, the set can be built to fit it.
When you send sizes, send the inside dimensions and the height you need to clear. A handwoven basket is measured by hand and carries small differences from piece to piece, so a tolerance agreed in writing at sampling stage saves an argument at inspection. For reference on the scale retailers choose, the Muji large rectangular basket is about 37 x 18.5 x 26 cm.
How much weight will a water hyacinth basket hold?
Capacity depends on the weave density, the thickness of the cord and whether the base is reinforced, so it is a figure to confirm per design rather than a property of the fiber. As a published reference point, Muji states a load of about 5 kg for its large water hyacinth basket, and advises against loading heavy items into it. Ask your supplier for the figure on the specific design you are buying, and have it stated on the specification sheet if your market requires a load claim on the packaging.
Where water hyacinth works, and where it does not
This is the part worth being blunt about. Water hyacinth is a plant fiber, and moisture is its enemy. Muji’s own care instructions for its water hyacinth baskets tell customers not to wet them or use them in highly humid places, because doing so can cause mold, color transfer or discoloration. The same page advises keeping the basket in a dry place, airing it occasionally in a shaded and well ventilated spot, keeping it away from open flame, direct sunlight and high heat, and not standing it on metal because of the rust risk. It also notes that fine splits can work loose and catch clothing.
In practice that means a water hyacinth basket belongs in a bedroom, a living room, a hallway or a dry pantry. An unventilated bathroom or a laundry room full of steam is where returns come from. If a laundry program is what you are after, the shapes and lids that work for it are covered in our piece on water hyacinth laundry basket designs, what US retailers ask for in that category is in our guide to laundry hampers and storage baskets for US retailers, and the care routine we send to customers is in our guide to how to prevent and treat mold on natural fiber baskets.
Buyers often ask us to compare the fiber with seagrass before they decide, since the two look similar in a photograph and behave differently in a room. We have set that out side by side in the differences between water hyacinth and seagrass.
What should you check on the first sample?
Six checks catch almost everything that goes wrong later, and all of them can be done on the kitchen table with the sample in front of you.
- The rim. Cord ends should be tucked and bound, not cut flush and hoping to stay put.
- The base. Load it, then set it on a flat surface. It should sit level and not rock.
- The handles. Stitched through the wall carries weight. Applied to the surface does not.
- The smell. Dry and faintly grassy is correct. A musty smell means the piece was packed before it was fully dry.
- The set. Stand all sizes together. Tone should sit within a range you are happy to put on one shelf.
- The inside. Run a hand round it and feel for splits that could snag fabric.
We weave in our own 9,000 sqm factory in Nga Son, Thanh Hoa, with 30 full time staff and 500 to 600 seasonal weavers in the villages around it, and the site is audited to both SMETA and amfori BSCI. That matters for this category because drying and finishing are done in house, which is where moisture problems are either prevented or created. If you want to see one piece before you commit, a round water hyacinth basket with a braided handle is a good first sample, because it shows the braided cord, the handle fixing and the rim finish all at once.
Water hyacinth baskets from our range
Every piece below is woven from water hyacinth, and the four cover the formats described above: a rectangle, a stackable kitchen basket, a round basket with handles and a cubic basket that folds flat.
Frequently asked questions
Are water hyacinth baskets waterproof?
No. Water hyacinth is a dried plant fiber and it absorbs moisture. It should not be washed, soaked or used anywhere it will stay damp. Wipe it with a dry or barely damp cloth and let it air in a shaded, ventilated place.
Can I put a water hyacinth basket in a bathroom?
Only in a dry, well ventilated bathroom, and not next to a shower. Steam is the main cause of mold on this fiber, so if the room holds humidity, choose a different material or a lined design and say so on the product care label.
What is the difference between a water hyacinth basket and a seagrass basket?
Water hyacinth comes from an aquatic plant and is warm brown, soft and slightly spongy. Seagrass from Nga Son is paler, smoother and silkier. The two are compared in detail in our journal piece on the differences between water hyacinth and seagrass.
Can you make a water hyacinth basket in my own size?
Yes. Custom sizing is available across most of our categories, and the bespoke design service can work from your sketch, a reference photo or a sample you send us. Send the inside dimensions and the fixture height you need to fit.
Do your water hyacinth baskets come with a fabric lining?
Lining is a specification question rather than a standard feature, and it depends on the design. Tell us at quotation stage whether you need a lining, what fabric and whether it should be removable, and we will confirm what is possible for that shape.
Looking at a water hyacinth basket program for next season?
Send us the sizes, the weave you like and the room it is going into. We will come back with a specification, photographs of the nearest design in production, and a sample if you want one in your hands.
